These five letters were written to Lewis Allen Alderson by his friend Samuel P. Robbins. Robbins describes his time spent traveling by boat to St. Louis and a visit made by Charles A. Wickliffe and Henry Clay, congressmen from Kentucky, to the city of Charleston, West Virginia. Robbins states that he feels "an unaccountable coldness and deadness in matters of religion" but later urges Alderson to join him in the fall of 1832 at the Andover Theological Seminary in Massachusetts. Alderson later moved to Atchison, Kansas, in 1858 and was a prominent Baptist minister. He died in Atchison in 1881.
