This black and white photograph shows Walter A. Huxman with a group of women from the Kansas Democratic Party. He established his career as a public official by serving as Reno County's assistant attorney (1915-1919), and later the city attorney of Hutchinson, Kansas (1919-1921). In 1936, Huxman was nominated as the Democratic candidate for governor. He was elected on November 3, 1936, and became the twenty-seventh governor of Kansas. Huxman served only one term and was defeated in the 1938 general election by Republican candidate Payne Ratner. He left office on January 9, 1939 to return to private life. However, within a few months, on April 24, 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt nominated Huxman to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth District. He held this position until stepping down, in 1962, due to declining health. Judge Huxman passed away on June 25, 1972 at the age of eighty-five. Burial was at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas.
