Brothers Swan, Gust, and John Burk are shown, left to right, in this studio portrait from the early 1900s. All emigrated from Sweden to the United States shortly after the Civil War, Swan in 1865, Gust in 1867, and John in 1871. Swan and Gust homesteaded in the New Gottland area of McPherson County, Kansas, in the spring of 1871, and were among the earliest settlers in that part of the county. John was a tailor who settled first on the East Coast, then moved to Hutchinson in the late 1880s or early 1890s.
