Walter Augustus Huxman

This black and white photograph shows Governor Walter Huxman during his inaugural parade along Sixth & Kansas in Topeka, Kansas. Humxan, a Democrat, was elected on November 3, 1936, as the twenty-seventh governor of Kansas, (1937-1939). He served one term and was defeated in the 1938 general election by Republican candidate Payne Ratner. Huxman left office on January 9, 1939, to return to private life. However within a few months, on April 24, 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt nominated Huxman to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth District in Topeka, Kansas. He held this position until stepping down in 1962 due to declining health. Judge Huxman passed away on June 25, 1972, at the age of eighty-five. Burial was at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas. Topeka business in the background include Nifty Nut House, J. E. McFarland Drugs Store No. 3, and Stephenson and Webb Insurance.
