Archaic Projectile Point

This Archaic period dart point was recovered from 14GR324, a Native American camp site in Greenwood County. The pinkish color of the chert is a result of the flintknapper heat treating the material to improve the chert's knapping qualities. After knapping the dart points were mounted to the dart fore shaft, and then thrown with an atlatl.

Scallorn Projectile Points

These Scallorn arrow points were found in Greenwood County and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in l984. Scallorn arrow points are small corner notched or expanding stem arrow points with barbed shoulders. They may even show fine serration along the blade edges. Bows and arrows appear during the Early Ceramic Period and were in use into the 1800s.

This candlestick holder was excavated at Fort Hays in Ellis County. It was recovered in four pieces and reconstructed. Once someone's proud possession, the holder is quite colorful and has an unusual leaf shape.
