This china doll head was excavated in 1966 at Fort Hays in Ellis County. China doll heads are described by their hair style. This doll, with her center parted hair and comb marks on the side most resembles those of the 1850s and 1860s.

Candlestick holder

This candlestick holder was excavated at Fort Hays in Ellis County. It was recovered in four pieces and reconstructed. Once someone's proud possession, the holder is quite colorful and has an unusual leaf shape.

Great Bend aspect Little River focus vessel

This pottery vessel was found at the Paint Creek Archeological site, a village site in McPherson County, Kansas and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1971. The pot was reconstructed from two large sherds, with the spaces filled in with plaster. The Paint Creek site is what archeologists call part of the Little River Focus of the Great Bend Aspect, whose people practiced fishing, hunting, gathering, and agriculture.

Snuff Jar

This ceramic snuff jar was found at Fort Hays (14EL301) in Ellis County. Its lettering declares it to be from the C. W. Gail & Ax snuff makers of Baltimore, Maryland for display in a store. Gail and Ax were in tobacco business from around 1860 until 1891. The jar was made by the Avalon Fainece potters of Baltimore between 1882-1884.

Protohistoric Ceramic Vessel

This reconstructed ceramic vessel was found in Pottawatomie County and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1925. It's elaborate decoration of nested chevrons, punctate borders, and parallel incised lines make it similar to vessels created by the Oneota during the Protohistoric period.

This reconstructed pottery vessel was found at the Booth Archeological site, a hamlet site in Jackson County, Kansas. The pot was reconstructed from many sherds, with the spaces filled in with plaster. The vessel is from the Grasshopper Falls Phase which occurred during the Early Ceramic Period. A cord-wrapped paddle was used to make the roughened surface treatment of this vessel.

This Middle Ceramic Bluff Creek Complex vessel was found at the Hallman village site (14HP524) in Harper County in 1988. A cord-wrapped paddle was used by the American Indians to make the roughened surface treatment of this otherwise undecorated pot.

This Gothic style pepper sauce bottle was excavated from the Quindaro Townsite, an archaeological district now part of Kansas City, KS. These bottles are sometimes more common called Cathedral style because the panels appear to display cathedral windows.

Munkers Creek Projectile Points

The Munkers Creek phase describes a stone tool technology restricted primarily to the Flint Hills. During this time most of North America was in a prolonged drought so severe that Archeologists thought people left the Plains. Munkers Creek artifacts show that people stayed, but they may have chosen their habitats carefully. Munkers Creek projectile points, like these illustrated from the William Young site (14MO304) in Morris County, were launched using a spear thrower.

Ridenour-Baker Grocery Bottle

This nearly complete bottle was recovered from the original site of the Adair Cabin (14MM327) in Osawatomie, Kansas in 2014. This botlle may have held a flavoring, such as vanilla. The Ridenour-Baker Grocery Company operated a successful grocery distribution and warehouse business, first in Lawrence, Kansas and later in Kansas City, Missouri.

These folders contain correspondence subject files with Governor Arn. The subject of this box is floods. Starting on July 13, 1951, one of the most costly floods in Kansas' history swept down the Kansas River valley into the Missouri River basin. The Kansas River valley had flooded before but not with this magnitude and damage. During the period of July 9-13, some areas in the Kansas River basin received 18.5 inches of rain. The eastern half of the basin averaged 8 inches.
